Red Hat has started beta testing the product Red Hat Software Collections, allowing the use of a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and the development of new technology components of web-stack without waiting for the next branch RHEL and installing third-party packages from unofficial external sources.

Red Hat Software Collections 1.0 includes packages with more recent versions of programs than are part of the regular RHEL. For example, to install the proposed Ruby 1.9.3, Rails 3.2.8, Python 2.7, Python 3.3, PHP 5.4, Perl 5.16.3, node.js 0.10, MariaDB 5.5, MySQL 5.5 and PostgreSQL 9.2.
