Linux-Mint-15Linux Mint Debian Edition: Update Pack 7 was released as the “latest” update pack yesterday.

A new version of the assembly of alternative distribution Linux Mint – Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) Update Pack 7, made on the basis of Debian Testing packages ( classic Linux Mint is based on packet- based Ubuntu).

In addition to using Debian packages, LMDE important difference from the Linux Mint is the constant upgrade cycle packages (model of continuous updates : semi-rolling release), in which the packages updates come out constantly and the user at any time has the ability to go to the last versions. Apache Software FoundationThe Apache Software Foundation has announced the release of high-performance http-server Apache Traffic Server 4.0.1.

New Apache Traffic Server 4.0.1 can act as an intermediary, redirecting requests to the backend that generates dynamic content, or provide a return of static objects, such as files, JavaScript, CSS and images. Traffic Server also includes a set of services for use in a distributed system, including configuration tools, management sessions, balancing authorization, and routing requests.

Apache Traffic Server supports caching, which allows to reduce the load on the server and reduce internal traffic through the re-using and the impact of caching frequently accessed web- pages, images and references to web-services. For queries that can not be cached can be used proxy mode provides load balancing means and filtering requests. To extend the functionality of Apache Traffic Server provides an API for developing plug-ins that can perform various tasks, such as changing the HTTP- headers and content to send content or creating handlers c implementation support new protocols. KDE Plasma ActiveThe KDE project has announced the release of user interface Plasma Active 4, based on KDE technology and is optimized for use on touch-screen devices.

Basic user interface Plasma Active is designed for use on a Tablet PC, but can be adapted for smart phones, set-top boxes , media centers and home automation systems, automotive infotainment systems and other devices with touch screens.

The key difference from existing popular mobile platforms – Plasma Active is targeting to use the device as a personal digital assistant, which occupy a central position data and user tasks, rather than the delivery of disparate collection of applications. All parts of the Plasma Active are part of a single system and is closely integrated. From the classic versions for PC and netbooks KDE Plasma Active is different different approach to the organization of interaction with the user, implying control via gesture control and manipulation of the touch screen, combined with the activation of the concept of rooms (Activities), isolating the different activities. Future of Open Source SurveyA group of enthusiasts who live in the “Silicon Valley”, is developing the project of a new Linux-based server’s system CoreOS, based on an architecture that differs greatly from the usual distributions Linux.

At its core is based on the ideas of CoreOS ChromeOS, adapted for mass deployment of server systems. To test are available early alpha build CoreOS, suitable for running running VirtualBox and QEMU / KVM. The project released under license the Apache 2.0.

Key features CoreOS:

– Minimalism. The system contains a minimal set of components that are sufficient to meet only isolated containers (cgroups + namespaces), which in turn contain arbitrary stuffing to run only essential server applications. In fact, part of the base system includes only the kernel Linux, the system manager systemd, and a number of auxiliary services for managing the configuration and installation of updates; Continue reading

Red Hat LinuxRed Hat has announced the release of a distributed file system GlusterFS 3.4, which allows to organize work on multiple nodes of the distributed repository that is deployed on top of full-time POSIX file system, such as Ext4, XFS and Btrfs, with the use of FUSE (filesystem in userspace).

GlusterFS provides tools for automatic failover and provides virtually unlimited scalability by eliminating the reference to a centralized server meta-data (using distributed hash tables). Ready-to-install binary packages GlusterFS 3.4 prepared for Fedora, RHEL, CentOS, Debian and Ubuntu. Continue reading

Future of Open Source SurveyIn DragonFly BSD KMS adds support for Intel graphics cards

Francois Tigeot reported on the implementation of KMS module to switch to video mode kernel DragonFly BSD. Code is integrated into the master-branch git-repository DragonFly BSD. Supported graphics cards on the chipset Intel i915.

The basis was taken code for FreeBSD, which has been ported to the kernel DragonFly BSD. In addition to the Francois, the development was also attended by Aggelos Economopoulos, Johannes Hofmann and Matthew Dillon. In particular, the mechanism has been implemented PAT Matt Dillon. KMS support is required to use the latest versions of video drivers from Intel, which has been removed support for switching video modes at the user level (UMS) and left only support KMS (Kernel Mode Setting) to switch video modes at the kernel level. Project ToxThe project Tox developers set a goal of creating of free P2P alternative to Skype

Tox uses similar to the Skype P2P-model of interaction in the network for the dissemination of messages which use cryptographic techniques to authenticate the user and protect the transit traffic from interception. Support text messaging, voice, video and file transfer. The work is organized through a simple and typical of IM-client graphical interface.

One of the key objectives of the project is to ensure the privacy and confidentiality of correspondence, including protection from a possible traffic analysis intelligence services. For ensuring addressing of users used the distributed hash table (DHT) which organized the work in the style of BitTorrent. The communication channel has been organized by means of a superstructure over the UDP protocol with realization of session level (Lossless UDP). Continue reading
