KDE Plasma 4.11 will be the last release in the 4.x series, and will be supported by 2 years
Aaron Seigo, the main developer of KDE-shell Plasma, said that the planned August 14 release of KDE Plasma Workspaces 4.11 will be the last in a series 4.x and he will be replaced by Plasma Workspaces 2, based on Qt5 and KDE Frameworks 5.
KDE Plasma Workspaces 4.11 is regarded as a stable release with long term support, summarizing the existence of branches 4.x. Corrective update for KDE Plasma Workspaces 4.11 will be issued for two years.
Particular attention should be paid to the fact that we are talking only about the desktop KDE Plasma Workspaces, after which the developers KDE SC 4.11 will switch their attention to the draft Plasma Workspaces 2. Within two years, all the activity in the branch KDE Plasma 4 will be exclusively related to the elimination of errors and increased stability – new features will not be added. Such a move would significantly raise the stability of the branch 4.x, which makes it an attractive choice for distributions with long term support.
Other parts of KDE, including applications, libraries and runtime-components will be developed according to its own schedule, which does not preclude the emergence of issues KDE SC 4.12 and 4.13, but the shell Plasma in these versions will remain unchanged. It should be noted that this approach will allow for a seamless transition to KDE 5, as provided in the KDE 4 applications will be able to migrate to KDE Frameworks 5 by simply rebuilding with a slight change in build scripts – API in KDE Frameworks 5 will remain the same, just change the shape of the partition libraries separate modules (to be prepared a set of interacting with each other independent of frameworks).
