The company today announced a new multi-core processor, in which the number of cores has been increased to 72, and reported that in the future the company will release a chip that will have more than 100 cores.
Naturally, such chips are not designed to use in the calculation of general purpose, as modern applications simply can not parallelize the thread data in a hundred streams. Tilera to say that their chips have one significant feature: Although the individual core is not particularly powerful, in aggregate, these cores can handle completely different data simultaneously. This is very useful, for example, network switches, network devices as required to handle the traffic from dozens of clients at once.
In Tilera said that earlier in the more or less the same approach in the design of its chips used and Qualcomm, and Apple, and IBM, and Intel. But none of them not to bring the concept chipostroeniya to hundreds of cores. According to representatives of Tilera, their chips – the first on the market really work samples with dozens of cores. The company predicts that the market in the near future should be new intelligent network switches, which will focus on the use of programmable functions and multithreaded network processing.
Now the company announces processor Tilera Tile-Gx72, designed to work with the special “Tilera’s” version Linux. The company said that their chip has two major advantages, which will be evaluated by device manufacturers: First, it 64-bit, allowing it to work with large amounts of memory, and, secondly, the chip supports fast DDR3-memory.
In addition, the chip itself has a proprietary kommunimkatsionnuyu logic to manage the vast number of processor cores. Also note that these chips have their own (like no Intel, nor IBM, nor AMD) organization system processor cache memory (of a 72-core chip 23 MB cache), its own system of PCI Epress- ports, support for up to eight Ethernet-port 10 Gb / s.
The company did not report how many new processors will cost and when to start their delivery. But was told that GX72 created on 28-nm technology standards and in the future will support memory DDR4. Depending on the model, the processors operate at a frequency of 1 to 1.2 GHz.
