Next year Microsoft will release a new generation of Windows desktop operating system.
It is expected that Microsoft announces a new product at the conference Build-2014. Paul Thurrott, blogger and journalist, who writes about Microsoft, has learned about the software giant’s plans.
Microsoft will introduce a new operating system Windows 9 next year, the announcement of which will take place this spring at a conference for developers Build-2014. According to Thurrott, Microsoft has completed updates for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1.
A new version of Windows, codenamed “Threshold”, was first reported in early December 2013. The name was borrowed from the game Halo. However, Thurrott noted that Windows 9 will likely be the final name for the new OS. It is interesting that the software giant has decided to stop using the number 8 in the name of the next operating system.
“Development of the new OS will consist of three consecutive stages, the result of the completion of each stage will be two preliminary and one final builds of the operating system.”- says bloger.
Paul Thurrott believes that with the release of Windows 9, Microsoft expects to improve the image of the platform, as well as become the first cross-platform solution, combining the functions of Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox.
Thurrot pointed out that Microsoft has taken into account users’ discontent and a full button “Start” should return in Windows 9. Developers will focus on improving the performance of applications in new OS. In addition, the system will get updated tiled interface Metro 2.0. It is assumed that Metro-applications can be run in a separate window in the desktop mode. The main purpose of the new changes is to get better usage of the touch-screen mobile devices.
Earlier, website ZDNet reported that Microsoft was actively working to unify their operating systems. “The company has a Windows Phone, Windows RT and Windows. Microsoft will not have three operating systems“- the magazine informed with reference to the source at Microsoft who is familiar with the situation.
According to Paul Thurrott, release of Windows 9 will be in April 2015. But before that three pre-release versions will be available for the testers. The names of each version (Beta, Release Candidate, etc.) are still unknown.
The Verge, which published the news about the release of Windows 9, almost simultaneously with Thurrott, notes that situation with the new Microsoft OS, resembles a situation after the release of Windows Vista. Then, to smooth users’ dissatisfaction with Windows Vista, Microsoft’s developers had to release Windows 7 with significantly improved interface and new name.
It should be noted that Windows 8 is not as successful as it was expected. According to Net Applications for, the total market share of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 OS in November 2013 was 9.3%, which is 0.05% less than the previous month. Windows 8 lost 0.87% per month (7.49% to 6.66%), and Windows 8.1 has strengthened its position by 0.92% (from 1.72% to 2.64%).
